The Dutch Spork
Hello, I'm H. Lee Messina, an East Coast native, self-taught collage artist, and founder of The Dutch Spork. While I studied film and production design, my artistic focus shifted post film school to a more immediate, hands-on practice.
My work is layered, textural, and intuitive, guided by an understanding of composition and visual sequencing honed in my film studies. I turn scraps into stories by cutting, repurposing, and reassembling overlooked fragments—like bread tags, envelopes, and vintage magazine clippings—into surreal collages.
My role often shifts between maker and spectator, allowing meaning to surface in ways I can't plan. Ultimately, I aim to explore how these imperfect fragments can take on new life, blurring the line between memory and material.
My work has been featured in a diverse array of publications including Argyle Lit Magazine, Magpie Zine, The Words Faire, Juste Milieu Zine, Quaaludes Magazine, The Hopper Magazine, The Spotlong Review, Solarpunk Magazine, Blood + Honey Lit, Big Wing Review, Utopia Science Fiction, Nocturn Magazine, Quarter Press, 3Elements Review, Paper Dragon, Drabble Cast, Crow Toes Quarterly, and Love Your Rebellion.
